Thing 3 - Stretch

The article "9 Reasons Teachers Should Blog" was very interesting to me.  It inspired me to want to use blogs in my classroom, with my students, and potentially keep one of my own.  Blogs can be a great way to track student work and participation.

I was particularly intrigued when I read the line "no more papers written to be read by no one."  All too often we write or have students write papers that no one besides the teacher ever reads, this is a very interesting concept to me.  We put so much work into writing papers, and if the student is ok with it, it would be awesome to display that work in a positive way.

I also liked the idea of "building your own library of content and resources and share it with others."  I think a blog or website would be a really cool way to organize content to use in my class.

Thanks,

John D.

  1. Hi John! I love the background for your blog :) I also like your ponderings about using a blog as a community of proof of student learning during your class -- especially for our more tech savvy and mature eighth grade students. A weekly post shared with the class could show growth, unanswered questions, reflection, etc. If you do use a blog next year, let me know how it goes! Thanks!

  2. I agree with Emily on both counts- background and thoughts on Blogging. I think you should go for it. Blogging is a great way for students to showcase their passions and personality. Be sure that you set the tone and have a good talk about what's appropriate and what's not, before turning them lose.

  3. Thanks for bringing up the point that most of what students write is only read by one maybe two people. Using blogs to allow students to have their writing read by the public could be really empowering for a student.
